THE EARLY DAYS

We started as Moles Brewery in 1982 when Roger left the grasp of national brewer and set-up in his home town of Melksham.

With his new found freedom Roger started sourcing the best barley and hops to produce his first batch of beer. Moles Cask Bitter 4.0% ABV (later known as Moles Best Bitter) became the first beer from the Melksham brewery of Moles. And, like all our beers, was an all malt brew with no supplemental sugars added.

In October 1985 Roger and his wife Laura purchased the entire business and the Catte family became the new owners of Moles Brewery and Cascade Drinks Ltd.

Over the following years the initial beer range has been reviewed and refined. Best Bitter was joined by Tap (3.5% ABV) and the 5% Mole Catcher, a Gold Medal winner in the strong bitter category at the CAMRA Great British Beer Festival 2011.  In addition there are seasonal ales produced throughout the year and beers to commemorate events such as St. George’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.

One such seasonal ale was first brewed for the Rugby World Cup and has now become a permanent fixture in Moles portfolio, known as Rucking Mole a superb, full-flavour 4.5% ABV.

When the brewery was expanded and new equipment added the brewing settled down to a great range of core ales which now includes; Gold (3.8%), Best (4.0%), Dark (4.5%), Elmo’s (4.4%) and the aforementioned Rucking Mole, the decision was made by Roger to introduce an own brand cider into the portfolio.

And with this Black Rat Cider was born. It became an instant success with consumers thoroughly enjoying the fun of the brand and the taste of this new cider. Black Rat was one of the first full taste and full strength ciders and after launching as a keg product was soon followed by bottled, scrumpy and now available as a perry as well.

Black Rat still enjoys a fantastic following and, oddly enough, is one of the best selling ciders in Scandinavia, Thailand and soon to be Japan!

Cascade Drinks has become the leading drinks wholesaler for Wiltshire and now supports many hundreds of businesses with their drinks needs. Stocking all the national beer brands including Fullers, Carlsberg and Heineken as well as all of their spirits and soft drinks requirements. Cascade is now the go-to wholesaler for licensed businesses in the area.

They soon realised that when you sell to pubs it is important to truly understand the issues that licensees face day in and day out and to this end, Laura and Roger purchased the freehold of their local pub, the Rising Sun on Bowden Hill, Lacock, and ran the pub alongside the brewery and drinks business, establishing a showcase for the company’s Wiltshire brewed real ales.

Now the estate has seven pubs – which still includes The Rising Sun and now spread as far as Bristol – for more information on our pubs please click www.cascadepubs.co.uk.

In 2015 a range of new seasonal beers were launched by the now named Moles Brewing Co. These beers are available for just two months before they are pulled and the next one arrives. They all continue with the Moles traditional brewing methods – with the six brews named Six Fingers, Mowdy Jack, Jailers Daughter, Golden Hills, Mole Catcher and Underground Porter.

The latest cider brand to be launched by Moles Brewing Co is West Country Gold. This brand new cider is the perfect premium cider for customers seeking a slightly lower ABV (4.8%) and has a lovely, crisp and refreshing taste.
